To be successful in the online Plant Breeding and Genetics Professional Certificate program, it is strongly recommended that learners have prior experience in plant science or genetics, or approval to enroll from current instructors or staff in the program. However, previous experience or a specific degree is not required to enroll. Recommended foundations include:
- Undergraduate coursework in plant science or genetics
- Undergraduate coursework in biology or other natural sciences
- UNL Refresher Modules in Genetic Principles, Plant Science, or Plant Breeding for Non-Plant Breeders
Take this free online test to determine if refresher modules are necessary before enrolling in this program. To take the test, prospective learners need to register as a new visitor to the Plant & Soil Sciences eLibrary.

The deadline to register for each module is one week prior to the start of the session. Learners can continue to register up until the end of the first week of a module, but will have to pay a $25 late fee. After the first week of a module, registration closes and the learner must wait for the next session.
